Tech and the Bro Code: Mental Health Edition

The month of June holds special significance for various reasons, including the historical Juneteenth celebration. It is also designated as Men’s Mental Health Month. Unfortunately, men’s movements and holidays often receive less attention compared to women’s, but we understand the reasons behind it. Men face numerous challenges while navigating toxic masculinity cultures that discourage them from expressing themselves and sharing their struggles with professionals or loved ones.

In the spirit of upholding the tenets of the Bro Code and commemorating this month, we have compiled a list of ways technology can help boost dopamine levels and support men’s mental well-being. We also want to encourage men who are experiencing mental health issues to seek professional help. Remember, we care about you.

MUSIC

Bro Emeritus William Shakespeare (1564-1616) understood the healing powers of music when he famously said, “If music be the food of love, play on; Give me excess of it.” Music has the ability to uplift your spirits, improve your mood, and bring joy to your life.

Our Recommendation: If you’re an iPhone user on a budget, we recommend the AirPods Pro 2. They offer class-leading noise cancellation and transparency features, making them one of the best options available. Pairing these earbuds with Apple Music allows you to enjoy Apple’s proprietary Spatial Audio, providing a more immersive music experience. If you’re willing to splurge a little, the AirPods Max is an easy recommendation and represents Apple’s finest work in the headset market to date. For Android users, the Sony WH-1000XM4 is an excellent choice, even though the WH-1000XM5 has succeeded it. The Galaxy Buds 2 Pro is a good option for Samsung users.

GAMING

Gaming is arguably one of the activities that foster bonding among men the most. Whether it’s a game of FIFA 23 on the PS4 or a team mission on Call of Duty, there will be banter, laughter, and endless jokes. Gaming can help you relax, improve your focus, and forge new friendships. However, it’s essential to be mindful of its addictive nature, as with any captivating pursuit.

Our Recommendation: The PS5 reigns supreme in the console world, offering a vast library of titles on the PlayStation platform to ensure you’re never bored. If PC gaming is more your style, steer clear of the MacBook and opt for a device equipped with an RTX 3060 or newer, capable of seamlessly handling any AAA game at 1080p. Regarding mobile gaming, the iPad is unparalleled, boasting a powerful processor, excellent screen quality, and impressive battery life.

MEDIA CONSUMPTION

Indulging in binge-watching your favorite shows, learning new skills from YouTube videos, and watching the English Premier League during the weekends are all considered self-care packages for men, and we wholeheartedly agree. If relaxing through episodes of The Boys, Euphoria, and more brings you joy, go ahead and enjoy, King!

Our Recommendation: Samsung Smart TVs are renowned for their quality, and we recommend considering the QLED series. If you’re on a budget, LED TVs are also great options; just ensure they are at least 43 inches and offer 4K resolution. For mobile media consumption, the iPad once again takes the crown. Its expansive screen real estate and vibrant colors will significantly enhance your viewing experience. Samsung also offers some excellent options in the form of the S-series tabs, which are easy and solid recommendations.

Kings, whatever you do, take a moment to appreciate and applaud yourself. You are doing your best, and things will only improve. And we understand how things can be sometimes; you can get all the devices recommended here and pay later. We have got you!

Happy Men’s Mental Health Month.
